DESCRIPTION: APW – Elgin, Lord Elgin, Grade 351, 23J, 16S, 14K gold OF clamshell style swingout recase with fancy initials on rear, white enamel DS dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, raised gold jewel settings, ornate decorative gold disk around balance jewel setting, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#12718337. Gross weight of assembled watch 47.2 dwt (73.5 g). A scarce to rare top grade watch, it is believed that the total production of the Lord Elgin Grade 351 is approximately 600 made. Though Elgin blocked 2000 serial numbers in total for the production of this grade it appears that only a fraction of these serial ranges were completed as all examples we have observed fall within either an initial group of 500 stem set movements (serials 12718001-12718500) or a later group of 100 lever set movements (serials 15159001-15159100). CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some micro-fine scratches on plates, few minuscule specks of oxide on winding wheels; dial has flake at center of seconds-register, some light outer chapter hls, few flakes at seconds hole, one short scratch within seconds-register, and two minuscule edges flakes under bezel at 6; fine hands have some oxide; case shows little wear, no dents or dings, engraving detail shows mild reduction, hinge is missing both end caps; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.
